Ok, let’s look at Gamera vs. Monster X / Monster from a Prehistoric Planet.

First, the movie is about Relive the Golden Age of Japanese monster films with this pair of titanic adventures! First, Daiei’s fire-breathing, flying turtle Gamera returns to battle a horned beast, Monster X, released from a stone statue moved from Wester Island. Facing off in Osaka, they create a demolition derby of destruction you won”t soon forget! Then Nikkatsu Studios takes its turn in the monster sweepstakes with Monster from a Prehistoric Planet, made as Dai Kyoju Gappa and also shown as Gappa: The Triphibian Monster. In this loose, unofficial remake of Gorgo, a baby reptile-bird monster is captured and taken to Tokyo where its agitated mother and father come looking to reclaim their offspring!.

I really enjoyed the performace of Yôko Yamamoto and Yôko Yamamoto. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Tamio Kawaji, Yôko Yamamoto, Yuji Okada, Koji Wada, Tatsuya Fuji.

No Brains is more like it. Richard Gere stars in this slick action thriller as your basic tough-but-dedicated cop who goes to New Orleans to avenge the death of his partner. On the way, he becomes involved with an illiterate Cajun beauty (Kim Basinger in the kind of role that unkind critics would call her typecast in before Ready to Wear and, of course, L.A. Confidential) who’s the property of a ruthless killer. It’s paint-by-numbers nonsense with lines (such as “we come from a society where it is very pleasurable to be a man”) that play as high camp–unfortunately, that’s not intended. Gere and Basinger’s relationship–they’d try again, equally unconvincingly, with Final Analysis–is patently silly. They spend the first half of the movie exchanging hilariously sultry meaningful glances, until they’re on the lam together, where the burning question is which actor’s hair will be more stylishly mussed. –David Kronke

So what’s The Great Race all about?

Director Blake Edwards, fresh from the success of the first two Pink Panther movies, indulged his love of classic slapstick comedy with this long free-for-all, which throws in everything but Laurel and Hardy’s kitchen sink. The film reunites Some Like It Hot stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, ably aided by a spunky Natalie Wood. The subject is a New-York-to-Paris auto race in the early years of the 20th century, pitting the Great Leslie (Curtis), a goody-goody dressed all in white–even his teeth sparkle–against the malevolent Professor Fate (Lemmon), whose coal-black heart is reflected in his handlebar mustache. He looks like a bill collector from a silent- movie melodrama. Lemmon does double duty, also playing the pampered, drunken king of a small European country, whose laugh sounds like the wail of a cat in heat. The film may be too long for its own good, and you really have to love Jack Lemmon to put up with his over-the-top performance, but it’s side-splitting in spots. It’s one of those movies, if seen in childhood, that stays in your mind for years afterward. Some of the bigger routines, such as a pie fight of epic proportions, don’t work as well as the simple chemistry between the perpetually exasperated Professor Fate and his much-abused assistant, Max (a terrific Peter Falk).
